Summery of Brave New World

The book Brave NewWorld takes place in two settings, in London, and in New Mexico. London has been turned into a controlling government ran robot state. The people in London are not robots persay, they are made not in the conventional way that we are, but they are made in test tubes. The people are fully human, they are just robots of the mind, they are greatly controlled by the government. The London community has five bifferent caste groups, the Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons. As the groups go down, the respect of the individual goes down as well. The Alphas are great looking, the smeartest of the castes, and the most respectable. The Betas are not as good looking, or as smeart, or as respectable as the Alphas, but more so then that of the Gammas. The other groups follow in the same order.

The book starts off by desribing to us the Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre, which is were all of the "people" in the brave new world are made. The book then goes on to tell us about the DHC , whos name we learn later on in the book is Thomas. Thomas is giving some children a tour of the Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre, sincethey will be working there in the future. Tomas goes on to explain about how the children are made, and how there are made into different castes. In the midst of his lecture, a new character is introduced by the name of Mustapha Mond. Mustapha turnes out to be one of the ten world controllers. Mustapha goes on to teach the group about hypnopaedia. After this point in the book it starts to go back and forth between Mustapha Mond, and  new characters named Lenina Crowne, and her friend Fanny Crowne. Lenina and Fanny are having a descution about Lenina not wanting to have as many men as she should. At this point in the book, we are taught that the people in this world are extreamly pnematic. The next character to come into the book is Bernard Marx. Bernard is the first of four different rebels in this book. We first meet Bernard in an elivador were he is talking with Lenina, he is asking her if she had thought about going to the Savage Reservation with him. Bernard is shy, and very much different from all of the other Alpha plus`. Bernard is built more like a Gamma or Delta then an Alpha. He is short, and small. He has a hard time getting heard by anyone of his caste, or any of the other ones. After Bernard and Lenina`s meeting in the elivator, Bernard introduces us to his friend (and the second rebel is the book) Hemholtz Watson. Hemholtz is somewhat the same as Bernard, but also very different. Both Hemholtz and Bernard hate the way that London is being run, and they both have (for the most part) deconditioned themselves. Hemholtz is Bernards only friend, and he always forgives Bernard for whater he does. Hemholtz is the only person mentioned in this book who is naturaly happy, without Soma.

We find out that Bernard has an interest in Lenina, and has already asked her to go on a trip with him to the "savage reservation." Linina tells Bernard that she would love to go, (only because she wants to go, not because she wants Bernard) and that they will go out that evening. When Bernard and Lenina go out on their date, they find out that they do not have anything in common, they dont even get along very well. Bernard wants to go for a walk on the beach, so that they can be alone and talk, but since Lenina is conditioned very well, she does not want to do this, and they go to a wresling match, with lots of people around so they wont be able to talk.

Bernard goes to Thomas, who is the DHC, and asks him to sign a permision form already signed by Mustapha to give him permission to go to New Mexico. Thomas tells Bernard of his trip to New Mexico, and about the girl that he took with him, and how she was lost, and that he dreams of her sometimes.

When Bernard and Lenina arrive at the savage reservation, they find  that the people stink, that they are old, fat, and have bad hygene. this offens Lenina more so then Bernard, because he is trying to seem unaffended.  Bernard and Lenina go to a spiritual ritual performed by the natives of the savage reservation. Lenina thinks it very strange that the people would want to hurt themselves for their      God(s). However Lenina catches the eye, of the only other non-native person in the area, who is quite good looking. The yound man tells us that his name is John, and that his Mother Linda used to be a Beta in Lonond.

Lenina is taken inside to talk with Linda, while Bernard stays outside ands talks with John. Bernard asks John of his childhood, and his earliest memoriers in the savage reservation. John tells Bernard of his Mothers lover Pope, of the cruel behavour given to Linda by the other woman of the Pueblo, and the cruel behavours given to himself by the otehr children of the Pueblo.

Lenina is inside talking with Linda about the way that the other woman treated her. Meanwhile, John and Bernard are outside discusing Johns memories of his mother.
